(AP) - The Hormel Institute in Austin is celebrating the opening of a $23 million expansion to its cancer research facility. About 400 people and leaders from around the state are expected to attend Friday's grand opening.
The medical research center focuses on cancer prevention and control and is part of the University of Minnesota and a partner of Mayo Clinic.
The expansion project was launched in 2006. It includes a new two-story research building for 20 state-of-the-art research laboratories.
The 1960 building was also renovated, and space was created for a seminar room, library, conference rooms and a supercomputer.
The University of Minnesota says The Hormel Institute will help the university reach its goal of becoming one of the top three public research universities in the world within 10 years.
The Hormel Institute has more than 100 employees. The expansion could add 100 more over the next few years.
