Former Mpls. Mayor Charles Stenvig dies at 82

Former Minneapolis Mayor Charles Stenvig has died at the age of 82.

Charles Stenvig was the last non-DFL mayor to occupy Minneapolis city hall. In 1969 Stenvig ran for mayor as an Independent and defeated the other major party endorsed candidates. He won another two-year term in 1971. Stenvig lost the seat in 1973 and regained it in 1975.

As a former Minneapolis police officer, Stenvig emphasized law and order, during a time when parts of the city and the nation were undergoing social upheaval.

Minneapolis City Council President Barbara Johnson reflected on Stenvig's public safety record.

"At a time when public safety needed to be a priority in Minneapolis, Mayor Stenvig put the spotlight there," Johnson said in a statement. "People were clamoring for better law enforcement, and he delivered."
