The Dalai Lama returned to the Twin Cities this weekend, where Sunday he observed Tibetan New Year celebrations for the first time outside India, where he lives in exile.

The Buddhist spiritual leader also gave the keynote address at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis on Saturday.

He said the materialistic culture of modern society has caused humans' good qualities to become dormant. He said ethics and human values need to be taught in school.

"I think unfortunately our existing education system [is] very much oriented toward material values. No talking about basic human values," he said.

The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. He was last in the Twin Cities in 2011.
