St. Paul Police have identified the officers involved in the shooting Thursday morning of a man who had been breaking windows and threatening passersby on St. Paul's West Side.
Officers Joseph Sandquist, who shot and killed the man, and Mark Grundhauser both have been with the department for nearly two years. The officers, who were unharmed, are on standard administrative leave, Police Chief Tom Smith said.
Police on Friday afternoon said they are still working with the Ramsey County medical examiner's office to positively identify the man.
"We are having a hard time getting his identity with 100 percent certainty," St. Paul Police Department spokesman Howie Padilla said.
Grundhauser and Sandquist responded at about 6:45 a.m. Thursday to multiple emergency calls about the man's behavior near the intersection of Wabasha Street and Plato Boulevard, Smith said.
Police said 911 callers warned that the man was "bloodied, breaking windows with a pipe and smashing at a school bus" and also tried to break the rear window of a woman's car.
