Motorists traveling Interstate 494 between the Mall of America and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport will run into a major detour this weekend.
MnDOT is closing I-494 between the mall and the airport starting at 10 p.m. on Friday. Crews are removing and replacing the bridge deck on northbound Cedar Avenue over the freeway.
They're also fixing bridge approaches and repairing the southbound side of Cedar Avenue. The 12th Avenue bridge over I-494 is also being repaired.
This will be the first of two weekend closures for the interstate, part of the ring of freeways around the Twin Cities and a bypass around both downtowns.
Eastbound 494 will get a major detour north on Interstate 35W, east on Highway 62 past the airport, then back down Highway 5. Westbound 494 will traffic will be routed up Cedar Avenue to Highway 62 and back down 35W.
Northbound Highway 100 from France Avenue to Bass Lake Road will also be reduced to one lane this weekend. Both closures are scheduled to end Monday morning.
