"The Iron Trial" is a new novel co-written by bestselling authors Cassandra Clare and Holly Black. Clare is the creator of the "Mortal Instruments" YA series. Holly Black wrote the "Spiderwick Chronicles" and "Dollbones."

The two good friends joined Kerri Miller Oct. 1 for the opening of the 2014 Talking Volumes season. They discussed how writers function as outsiders, how their collaboration works and why they wish they believed in ghosts.
