Our colleagues at Marketplace are reporting from one intersection in Los Angeles this week.
Their focus is gentrification and the corner of York and Fig is one of the centers of a demographic shift occurring in neighborhoods all over the country. The word gentrification itself is a controversial term to describe what happens when wealthier new -- often white - residents move into poorer - often minority - parts of a city.
Sometimes their incomes help attract new businesses and services to a neighborhood. But that is often accompanied by a rise in rent and other prices that make it hard for long-time residents to stay.
Marketplace reporter Krissy Clark joins The Daily Circuit to talk about the upsides and downsides of gentrification at the corner of York and Fig in LA. Myron Orfield of the University of Minnesota also joins the discussion to discuss whether smart planning can help create neighborhoods that work for newcomers and long-timers alike.
