A 6-year-old girl is dead and her mother in custody after a possible drowning in St. Paul's Highland Park neighborhood, police said Tuesday.
Officers were called to the 1300 block of East Maynard Drive at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, the department said in a news release. They arrived to find medics had taken a 6-year-old girl to the Children's St. Paul Pediatric Hospital, where doctors later pronounced her dead.
Police arrested the child's mother on suspicion of homicide. She is cooperating with investigators, they said.
The exact cause of the death and whether anyone else was in the home at the time is still under investigation.
"It's incredibly tragic. It's a sad, sad story," police spokesman Steve Linders said.
