Hennepin County prosecutors have charged a 24-year-old Minneapolis man with attempted murder and assault for a shooting on Thursday that injured a woman and her baby.
Prosecutors say Dontae Peterson is an associate of the "10z" gang and that he and other 10z "associates" got into a verbal altercation on Thursday with members of an unspecified rival gang.
Later in the day, according to the complaint, Peterson was in Peavey Park in the Minneapolis Phillips neighborhood when he saw an SUV driven by someone he thought was a member of that rival gang.
Prosecutors say Peterson opened fire but didn't harm anyone inside the SUV.
However, they say at least one bullet struck a nearby woman and her child. According to the complaint, the bullet passed through the woman's leg. Her 15-month old baby was struck in the abdomen causing permanent damage to the child's intestines and bowel.
Prosecutors charged Peterson with two counts of attempted second-degree murder and six felony assault charges. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday.
Minneapolis police say the shooting occurred just after 2 p.m. last Thursday afternoon. The brazen, daylight assault brought immediate reactions from both police chief Janeé Harteau and Mayor Betsy Hodges, who called it "unthinkable that a mother and her 15-month-old would be shot in Minneapolis while simply walking down the street."
