Three people were struck by lightning in two separate incidents as thunderstorms swept through northern Minnesota on Sunday.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says 51-year-old Jay Mott of Virginia was at a Cherry Township recreational facility carrying his 4-year-old daughter Ava when lightning struck them Sunday afternoon. The sheriff's office says bystanders who administered CPR revived the man at the scene.
The girl was taken by ambulance to a Duluth hospital. Her father was taken to a hospital in Hibbing before being transferred to the Duluth hospital, where he was in critical condition as of Monday morning, according a hospital spokesperson. The sheriff's office says the girl's injuries were believed to be less serious. She is in fair condition at the hospital.
A 12-year-old boy was also struck by lightning at the Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth shortly before 4 p.m. He was hospitalized and is in critical condition, according to a spokesperson for the Duluth Police Department.
A forecaster at the Duluth office of the National Weather Service told the Duluth News Tribune that thunderstorms popped up across northeastern Minnesota throughout the day Sunday, often with little warning.
