June is awareness month for post-traumatic stress disorder.

The PTSD diagnosis was created in 1980. While it's often talked about in military contexts or with victims of other trauma, it's being widely discussed again following the recent massacre at Orlando's Pulse nightclub.

The majority of people who experience trauma don't experience PTSD. But for those who do, symptoms can get bad. And the effects can begin even years after the initial incident.
