Man dies after being run over by Green Line train in Minneapolis

A man died early Saturday after he was run over by a light rail train in Minneapolis.

Metro Transit spokesperson Howie Padilla said the Green Line train was leaving the Stadium Village station near the University of Minnesota at about 1:20 a.m. when the man fell from the platform between two train cars and was run over. The man died at the scene.

Padilla said Metro Transit police are trying to figure out why the man fell.

"What our investigators are doing right now is of course looking at video — and if there are any witnesses to be spoken to, they're doing that," he said. "(They're) trying to piece together what may have been going on to have this individual fall into the train as he did."

Padilla said the train had just left the station and was moving at a slow rate of speed.

The name of the man who died has not been released.
