The Declaration of Independence made equality an American ideal, but it took a Civil War and three constitutional amendments to establish it as law.
In his new book, “The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution,” Pulitzer winner and Civil War historian Eric Foner tells how the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments altered the course of history and changed what it means to be an American.
MPR News host Kerri Miller spoke with Foner about the book.
