Around this time last year, some politicians were still promising that the spread of COVID-19 would “disappear,” despite months of pleas from scientists to take the pandemic seriously.

Author Michael Lewis wrote about some of the people who were sounding the alarm — from a teenager whose science fair project helped us better understand social circles to the researchers who examine how pathogens spread.
