Minnesota Now with Cathy Wurzer

Avian flu cases increase in birds

The USDA is sending an emergency response team to Minnesota to help contain the spread of avian flu. The highly contagious and lethal disease has so far infected commercial flocks in Meeker, Stearns, Kandiyohi and Lac qui Parle counties. A backyard flock of ducks and chickens in Mower County has also been infected. So far, more than 350,000 birds have been affected. The USDA team is scheduled to arrive in Minnesota on March 30 to help poultry producers.

Abby Schuft is a University of Minnesota Extension Educator on poultry. She joins host Cathy Wurzer to discuss the implications of the outbreak and how chicken owners can keep their flocks safe.
