St. Cloud and other cities see fewer apply at police departments

Two bills introduced in the state legislature this week offer additional financial incentives to entice new peace officers to apply for jobs; including up to ten thousand dollar bonuses and an exemption from paying state income tax. Legislators who support the bills say it is an effort to recruit police in departments with critical staffing shortages.

The St. Cloud Police Department is one of those departments. The department received 82 percent fewer applications in 2021 compared to a decade prior. St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson joined Minnesota Now to talk about it.
