Meet Curtis Gilbert

Curtis Gilbert is a senior editor at APM Reports, focusing on investigative journalism, longform digital storytelling and podcasts. In this role, he has led complex reporting collaborations, including the award-winning 2022 podcast “Sent Away,” produced with KUER and The Salt Lake Tribune, which earned the prestigious Barlett & Steele Award for investigative business journalism.

Curtis also contributed to the first two seasons of “In the Dark,” recipient of the Peabody and duPont-Columbia awards, and currently edits the acclaimed “Sold a Story.” His reporting has had real-world impact — shutting down businesses, prompting lawsuits, influencing congressional reports and leading to the resignation of public officials. His work has been featured on NPR, Marketplace, “Reveal” from The Center for Investigative Reporting, and public radio stations nationwide as part of the Public Media Accountability Initiative.

In addition to his audio journalism, Curtis has won three regional Emmy Awards for a series of viral web videos that break down complex news topics. Curtis was one of 10 American journalists selected for the 2007 Arthur F. Burns Fellowship, which allowed him to spend two months reporting at Deutsche Welle in Bonn, Germany. Other awards and accolades include two National Headliner Awards, a Public Media Journalists Association award and various regional journalism awards in the Midwest.

Curtis has a bachelor’s degree in communication and media studies and a minor in music from Macalester College, where he teaches narrative journalism. He grew up in rural central Maine and now resides in St. Paul with his wife and son.

Curtis plays the upright bass and, despite having little interest in sports, he paradoxically enjoys attending Major League Soccer games.
