(AP) Gov. Pawlenty ordered two Minnesota Army National Guard helicopters to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area to help fight a fast-moving forest fire.
The two UH-60 "Blackhawk" helicopters are helping with firefighting efforts in remote areas that can't easily be reached on foot. Water-scooping airplanes are also being used to battle the fire.
Two fires started by lightning last week have grown to 4,000 acres and are within five miles of the Gunflint Trail.
Cook County authorities have called for voluntary evacuations along a section of the scenic trail. The evacuation area includes the area between Gunflint Narrows Road and the west end of County Road 92, also known as Old Gunflint Trail. It also includes Gunflint, Loon, Tucker and Mash lakes.
Authorities said people in the area who leave should go to the community center in Grand Marais.
