(AP) A Lakeville man said Tuesday he had no idea that the Powerball ticket he carried in his wallet for a month was worth more than $47 million until he went to a grocery store the day before.

During a news conference at the headquarters of the Minnesota Lottery, Michael Hawes, 46, said he didn't know he bought the winning ticket on Nov. 1 until he stopped at a Cub Foods store in Bloomington.

With the winning ticket still in his wallet, Hawes said he went to New York. While he said he had a good time, it was not as much fun as it would have been if he had known he was a millionaire.

Hawes said he took Tuesday off from his job as a controller with Bloomington-based Groth Music, which sells instruments. He didn't say if he intends to keep working.

For now, a bigger decision will be whether to take the $47 million annuity spread over 29 years, or a lump sum worth $15 million after taxes. He has until Feb. 5 to decide.

When Hawes appeared at the news conference, he brought his 18-year-old son, Hunter, his fiancee, Sarah, and their eight-month-old son, who happens to be named Lucky.
