Wisconsin sailor dies in helicopter crash

(AP) - The Navy has officially confirmed the death of a 27-year-old Wisconsin sailor who was aboard a helicopter when it crashed in the ocean about 50 miles off California's southern coast.

Petty Officer First Class Cory Helman of New Richmond was one of four people killed in Friday's crash. His body hasn't been found but the Navy called off the search last night after saying it was unlikely someone could have survived the crash and such long exposure to cold water.

Cory's father, Jim Helman, says family members are drawing support from each other right now. But he's afraid the grief will really hit when the family receives the body.

Jim Helman says Cory was married for four years but had no children.

Cory was a 1998 graduate of New Richmond High School.

Also killed in the crash were sailors from Michigan, California and Louisiana.

New Richmond is in St. Croix County, about 15 miles east of the Minnesota border.
