Man shot on I-94 was veteran of Iraq war

(AP) - Police are releasing more information about a National Guard specialist who was shot dead in an incident involving police in central Minnesota.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department and the Alexandria Police Department say they received a report on Sunday morning that 28-year-old Brian William Skold was heading toward Brooten or Alexandria and was intoxicated.

The report says Skold possibly had a loaded shotgon in his vehicle and that he had been suicidal in the past.

Police say the family had been on a cell phone Skold and told police he did indeed have a shotgun.

The SWAT team was called in and authorities eventually used stop sticks to stop Skold's vehicle. Authorities negotiated with him for about 90 minutes but he refused to surrender.

Police say Skold fired his 12-guage shotgun at least once.

Two Alexandria police officers returned fire. Police haven't said whether Skold took his own life or was killed by police fire. Those officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

Skold, of Sauk Rapids, served in the Minnesota National Guard and was stationed in Baghdad in 2005.
