Catholics in Minnesota are celebrating this weekend. It is the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the Cathedral of St. Paul.
The granite building with its copper dome occupies the most prominent hill in St. Paul, overlooking both downtown and the Capitol.
The building's prime location, its grand staircase and rose windows indicate the important status Catholics had achieved in St. Paul in the early 20th century -- even as Catholics in much of the U.S. faced suspicion and discrimination.
Mary Wingerd teaches history at St. Cloud State University. She spoke with All Things Considered host Tom Crann about the people who built the cathedral.
