More than 9,000 motorists ticketed for not buckling up

Officers issued at least 9,324 tickets to motorists for not wearing seat belts during a two-week enforcement campaign, the Department of Public Safety said Wednesday.

Last year, 373 people were killed while in motor vehicles, and 194 of them were not wearing seat belts. The department estimates that the number of dead would have been cut in half if those drivers had buckled up.

Public safety officials estimate that more than 83 percent of Minnesota drivers do wear their seat belts, but say young drivers and people in pickup trucks aren't buckling up as much.

The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $25 dollars and can increase to up to $115 with court costs and administrative fees.

The "Click It or Ticket" campaign ran from May 21 to June 3. The number of citations issued is expected to rise as the remaining law enforcement agencies that participated file their reports with the state.
