The film was directed by Hungarian Lajos Koltai, who worked for 35 years as a cinematographer, which he says is the reason for the films visual style.
The plot revolves around the character of Ann Lord, played by Vanessa Redgrave.
As she lies on her deathbed, she's visited by her best friend Lila, played by Meryl Streep. Their intimate, often whispered conversation, takes Ann's mind back to tumultuous events surrounding Lila's wedding years earlier.
The cast also features Glenn Close and Clare Danes, who plays a young Anne in the flashbacks.
Minnesota Public Radio's Euan Kerr spoke with Lajos Koltai (pronounced LIE-osh COL-tie) about making the movie. Koltai says he was very careful when he shot Redgrave and Streep's big scene, lying on Anne's deathbed talking about the past.
