State lawmakers are still analyzing this month's school levy votes and the need for changes in the education finance system. The Senate education Finance Committee meets Tuesday to discuss the role of local levies in education funding system.
Three weeks ago, 99 school districts had funding measures on the ballot. About two-thirds were successful.
State Sen. Kathy Saltzman, DFL-Woodbury, is a member of the Senate committee.
"There needs to be less reliance on an operating levy to fund the basics," says Saltzman. "We need to look at the mix of state and local property tax dollars that are funding our schools."
Saltzman says she supports the work of a joint House-Senate task force on education finance reform. She says a lot of work is needed to come up with solutions before the 2009 budget session.
