Como Zoo polar bears headed to Detroit

Como Zoo's two polar bears are headed for Detroit.

The bruins will stay at the Detroit Zoo for a couple years while their St. Paul exhibit is enlarged.

Como Zoo's Michael Hahm said Detroit is the perfect temporary home for the bears, because they can remain together.

"That's one of the key things for Neil and Buzz, who are brothers. They have always been held together," explained Hahm. "If they were to lose the ability to be held together, it's very unlikely that we'd be able to bring them back here to Como and reintroduce them to each other."

Hahm said the bears will leave for Detroit in a few weeks, probably by refrigerated truck.

The bears were going to be sent to the Buffalo Zoo, but officials there backed out, saying they could not properly house the bears.

The new Como exhibit will cost $14.5 million to build with funds to come from a combination of public and private sources.
