State Supreme Court justices must fight for reelection

Two state Supreme Court justices will face opponents in this year's election, and two Twin Cities judicial races have attracted more than a half dozen candidates each.

According to the Secretary of State's office, Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul Anderson will face two opponents. The newest justice, Lorie Gildea will face three including sitting Hennepin County Judge Deborah Hedlund.

Court of Appeals Judge Terri Stoneburner will face one opponent. Hennepin and Ramsey each have open seats that have attracted seven candidates.

Typically, judges leave their seats before their terms end, which allows the governor to appoint successors. But in cases where judges retire at the end of their terms it's not unusual for several attorneys to run.

Most judges in the state are running unopposed.
