AG opposes Minnesota Power rate increases

Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson is taking a strong stand against Minnesota Power's proposed electrical rate increases.

Swanson says families are already being "squeezed like never before" by the rising cost of gas, food and health care. She says this isn't the time for a utility rate increase.

Swanson spoke at a Friday news conference in Duluth and encouraged Minnesota Power customers to speak against the proposed rate increases at public hearings.

The company has asked the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to approve residential rate increases that would average 24 percent over the next three years.

A spokesman for Minnesota Power's parent company, David McMillan, says the utility must cover the cost of meeting new emission standards and a state requirement that it produce more power from renewable sources.
