Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis will lay off all its staff and close its gallery in an attempt to keep the organization viable.
The organization is both a venue and promoter of exhibitions and performances. Board Chair James Farstad said the organization is trying to be cautious because it is clear some funders may not be able to deliver promised support in coming months.
"No, we are not facing a deficit at the moment, we are in a very severe cash crunch, and we are managing that cash flow crunch proactively," Farstad said.
Intermedia Arts will continue to present events requiring paid admission. The laid off staff will now serve as contract employees.
The organization will also hold a community meeting Friday afternoon to discuss ways of building community support, and will launch a fundraising effort to broaden the base of contributions.
