Almost like spring

Minnesota snow depth map shows bare ground in southern Minnesota.

You can almost feel a hint of spring in the air around the Huttner Weather Lab today.

With a mere 11 days until March, the higher sun angle is really noticeable. South and west facing hillsides now have exposed grassy areas. Even with a film of pasty clouds today, the filtered sun feels good as the mercury pushes 40.

A blunt reminder that it's still February is on the way tomorrow. A two piece weather system will "phase" to our east over Wisconsin, bringing another round of snow to the Badger State. Snow amounts look to be on the lighter side tonight and early tomorrow for Minnesota. Behind this system, a brisk north wind will usher in some borderline arctic air for one more shot of cold this month. Temperatures will begin to moderate by Sunday.

Even with this next shot of cold, winter is fighting a losing battle in the Upper Midwest. The medium range forecast models hint at the potential for heavy snow in early March, but no prolonged arctic outbreaks. I think the worst of winter is over. The higher sun in March just doesn't allow snow to stay on the ground long.

It's not time to get out the golf clubs just yet, but spring is a definite possibility in the coming weeks!
