Military officials say an Army soldier who grew up in Iowa and later moved to South Dakota has died after being shot near Kirkuk, Iraq.
The Defense Department says 28-year-old Sgt. LeRoy O. Webster was shot while on a dismounted patrol on April 25.
Iowa Army National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Greg Hapgood says Webster was born in Spencer and grew up in Hartley. He later moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Webster was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas. He had been with the unit since March 2006, and was deployed to Kirkuk in 2009.
Webster is survived by his wife, Jessica, three daughters and his parents.
