The Minneapolis Foundation on Tuesday announced it has distributed $500,000 through its Crisis Assistance Fund to help Twin Cities residents affected by the economic downturn.
The grants have provided food, energy and housing assistance to several non-profit agencies around the metro area, including: St. Stephens Human Service, the Minnesota Indian Women's Resource Center, Community Action Partnership of Minneapolis, and the Greater Twin Cities United Way.
The assistance fund includes donations from existing donors, the Foundation's trustees, and the Foundation itself.
"Many people - including many Minneapolis Foundation donors - have been looking for ways to help others through these tough times, but they haven't been sure what to do or how to make sure that their contributions get to people who most need help," said Don Taylor, vice president for development and client services at The Minneapolis Foundation.
"The Crisis Assistance Fund has helped donors make a bigger impact by combining and leveraging their contributions, and by directing donations to programs that can provide immediate services to people in need," Taylor said.
The foundation announced it will continue to distribute funds to select nonprofits later this month.
