Hmong group nets federal money for education efforts

The Twin Cities' Hmong American Partnership is one of 13 groups nationwide slated to receive federal grant money to support projects that help high school girls in math and science.

The U.S. Department of Education made the announcement earlier this week on the anniversary of Title IX, the federal law that requires that schools achieve gender equality.

The Hmong American Partnership will receive $115,133 for the first of a four-year grant, according to the Department of Education.

"These grants go hand-in-glove with our efforts to improve equity and access for women and girls in the classroom and on the playing field," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement. "While much has been accomplished since Title IX was enacted, we must continue to push for further progress."

The other grantees include:

Pittsburgh Public Schools, Pennsylvania;

Sonoma State University, California;

Chicago Public Schools, Illinois;

Northwest Vista College, Texas;

Berea College, Kentucky;

North Wasco County SD#21, Oregon;

Spokane Public Schools SD#81, Washington;

The Foundation for California State University, California;

Research Foundation of SUNY, New York;

Jefferson County Board of Education, Kentucky;

Adult Learning Programs, Alaska;

Queens Community House, New York.
