An advisory committee is considering whether to commission a study to try to gauge the impact of opening up Minnesota's trial courts to news cameras.
The panel was asked by the Minnesota Supreme Court earlier this year to design a pilot project to gauge the impact of expanded TV coverage cameras on victims and witnesses. Minnesota's current rules effectively ban cameras from nearly all trial court proceedings.
On Thursday, the advisory committee heard from University of Minnesota professor Eugene Borgida (BOR'-gih-duh). He presented a preliminary proposal for how to conduct an 18-month study to gather the information the Supreme Court wants in a scientific way.
The committee will decide later whether to approve the study.
