Prosecutors are defending their decision not to bring felony charges against an SUV driver in the death of a motorcyclist in St. Paul last August.
Winnie Lucas, 26, of St. Paul had reached for a cell phone charger just before the SUV she was driving struck James Davis, 29, of White Bear Lake on Interstate 94. Davis was dragged 150 feet and died.
Davis' mother had asked prosecutors to review the case three times for possible felony charges. But last week, Lucas was charged with four misdemeanors.
Prosecutors say they did not find that the driver acted with "gross negligence."
But the victim's mother, Lee Jacobson of La Crescent, says: "It's like she's going to walk."
Lucas acknowledges reaching for her charger but says her eyes never left the road.
