Suds specialists are gathering at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds with an enviable mission: finding the best home-brewed beer, mead and cider. First-round judging begins Friday. Judges will pare down entries in 28 categories and announce the winners a week from Saturday.
Those seeking the home-brew honors had to have their bottles in last week.
The categories run the gamut, from lagers to fruit beers to herb, spice and vegetable beers.
Last year there were 330 entries. Most were porters, stouts and ales.
There are separate categories for cider and mead, which is a fermented honey liquor.
