Telephone scam artists may be trying to get personal information from St. Cloud residents by claiming to be from the city's water treatment department, police officials said today.
Police were alerted to the possible scam today by an employee at the water treatment facility. The employee reported two complaints from residents who received automated voice messages from a caller claiming to be an official from the city's water treatment department.
The messages say that St. Cloud city employees are going door to door to conduct water testing. During the recorded message, listeners are asked to provide personal information via the phone's touch-tone dial.
The St. Cloud Police Department advised residents that the city is not conducting water quality testing right now. Callers should ignore the automated message and not provide any personal information, police officials said.
Callers with additional information on the possible scam can call the St. Cloud Police Department at 320-251-1200, or the city's water treatment facility at 320-255-7225.
