Outburst prompts McCollum to back Wilson’s opponent

The outburst by South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson during President Obama's speech last night resulted in a surge of campaign donations for the Democrat trying to unseat Wilson. Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum is among the donors. Wilson apologized for shouting "you lie," and Obama accepted the apology. Still, McCollum announced her political action committee will contribute $1,000 to the campaign of Rob Miller. Here's the news release:

St. Paul, MN - Congresswoman Betty McCollum announced today that her leadership political action committee - BETTY PAC - will donate $1,000 to the Democratic opponent of U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) who disgraced himself and the U.S. House when he shouted "You lie" at President Obama during last night's address to a Joint Session of Congress.

"Rep. Wilson's words were an insult to the President of the United States and an embarrassment to the U.S. House of Representatives," McCollum said. "He crossed a line of protocol and decency that may be acceptable for angry 'tea baggers' at a rally, but is completely unacceptable for a Member of Congress in the House Chambers. I want the voters of South Carolina's 2nd Congressional District to know they have a civil, respectful, and honorable choice to represent them in Congress - Rob Miller."

McCollum also urged other Democrats - in Minnesota and around the country - to work to support Wilson's Democratic opponent, Rob Miller, a former Marine Corps officer.
