Grand Portage State Park will be open on weekends only for the next several weeks due to construction on a new visitor center.
Beginning Tuesday, the park will be closed weekdays because heavy equipment will be operating in the parking lot and along the paved trail to High Falls, which is Minnesota's highest waterfall and the park's main attraction. The closures probably will run through early December,
The park in far northeastern Minnesota will be open for hiking, geocaching, and picnicking between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, but weekend parking will be limited to three or four cars at a time.
The new visitor center, which will double as a highway rest area, is expected to open in June.
