Lock and Dam 3 on the Mississippi River north of Red Wing is getting a facelift.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has received $70 million in stimulus funds to improve navigation safety and rehabilitate the lock and dam.
Work is scheduled to start in mid-January and be done by September 2011.
The lock opens to navigation for the season March 29, 2010, but the contractor will be allowed to close it for up to four days total per month. Closures won't be permitted Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays or holidays.
Recreational boaters who use Lock and Dam 3 should be alert to construction vessels in the area.
