Atlanta doppler storm total rainfall shows over a foot of rainfall in some areas in the past week.
When it rains, it pours.
The City of Atlanta is looking more like Atlantis in some areas today. A week of persistent rainfall has dumped over a foot of rain on the area. There are reports of as much as 20" in some areas near the city in the past week.

Significant flooding is occurring as a result. At least three flood related fatalities have been reported in the Atlanta area today. Schools are closed and in some cases students have been held at school because they cannot find safe routes home.
The heavy rain is part of a broad southerly fetch of moisture coming off the Gulf of Mexico. That Atlanta doppler radar is showing numerous bands of moderate to heavy rain in the area, and more rain is forecast through mid-week.
The scattered showers in our region are welcome in drought stricken areas, but will likely not be enough to put a dent in the drought this week. It would be good if we could take some of the Atlanta deluge and spread it around over the Upper Midwest.
