U of M to hold Norman Borlaug memorial service

The University of Minnesota will hold a public memorial service for the late scientist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug on Thursday, Oct. 8 in McNamara Alumni Center in Minneapolis.

Borlaug developed a type of wheat that helped feed the world, fostering a movement that is credited with saving up to 1 billion people from starvation. He died Sept. 12 from complications of cancer. He was 95.

Borlaug earned his doctorate in plant pathology from the university in 1942 and is considered one of the university's greatest alumni. He won the Nobel Prize in 1970.

Among the confirmed speakers at the memorial are university President Robert Bruininks, Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize Foundation and Judith Rodin, president of The Rockefeller Foundation.
