The Sherburne County sheriff says deputies shot and killed a person outside the government center in Elk River Friday after a confrontation.
Sheriff Joel Brott says two deputies made contact with the person, who was scheduled to attend a hearing in Sherburne District Court. The individual became confrontational and pulled out a handgun.
The deputies shot the person, who was taken to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. No other information about the individual has been released yet. An autopsy is planned.
Neither deputy was injured during the event, and both have been placed on paid, administrative leave.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Elk River Police Department are conducting the investigation.
Besides the sheriff's department, the government center building houses the jail, courtrooms and administrative offices.
