Several of the elected officials in Stearns County are stepping up and staying home in the spirit of shared sacrifice with county employees.
All of the county's 850 employees are required to take a day of unpaid leave this year to help balance the budget, but that doesn't apply to the county's nine elected officials.
However, most have voluntarily opted to reduce their pay.
A county official says that as of last week, County Attorney Janelle Kendall and Auditor-Treasurer Randy Schreifels had either taken a furlough day or signed up to do so. So had four of the five county commissioners.
The furloughs were expected to save Stearns County $860,000 this year, about 2 percent of annual payroll costs. They were part of $2.5 million in cuts the county board made earlier this year.
