Ellison says group paid $13k for Mecca pilgrimage

Rep. Keith Ellison has disclosed the amount of his privately-paid trip to Mecca last December, in response to a request from a House committee.

Ellison received $13,350 from the Muslim American Society of Minnesota to cover the expenses of the 14-day trip, according to documents filed Thursday.

In a letter sent to Ellison from the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct on Sept. 22, the committee said that Ellison disclosed the trip properly at the time.

But "upon further review," the committee said Ellison needed to disclose the amount of the trip and report the expenses on a form used for gifts, instead of one for travel costs.

"We consider this change to be merely a minor, technical correction, and we concur that you followed proper procedures and committee guidance," the letter said.

Ellison has characterized the trip as a Hajj or religious pilgrimage.
