Mankato residents have a chance to get rid of their old pills and medicines, thanks to a new program.
A free pharmaceutical collection program kicks off Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Snyders drugstore in Mankato. A second collection is scheduled for Nov. 5, from 2-6 p.m.
The new, federally approved program is touted as the first of its kind in Minnesota. It's aimed at keeping drugs off the streets and out of drinking water.
Only residential drugs are accepted - none from businesses. The medicines should be in their original containers with the labels attached.
People are asked not to mix drugs or black out information on the label until they visit the collection site, where they'll be given a marker to scratch out contact information.
