The Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota says the Rev. Brian Prior has been elected its next bishop.
The diocese said Saturday that Prior is tentatively set to be ordained and consecrated Feb. 13.
Prior has been the rector of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Spokane, Wash., since 1996. He and his wife have two teenage sons.
Prior said in a statement he was "overwhelmed and blessed" to serve in a place with such a rich history. The diocese of Minnesota has 106 congregations with about 22,000 baptized members.
One of the five candidates for bishop was the Rev. Bonnie Perry of Chicago. Had she been selected, she would have been only the second openly gay bishop of the Episcopal Church after Bishop V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire was consecrated in 2003.
