Fargo replacing ash trees ahead of borer invasion

The Fargo Park Board has voted to begin replacing 4,800 ash trees to prepare for an expected invasion of the emerald ash borer.

The beetles have killed tens of millions of trees in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and other Midwestern states, and were found in Minnesota last spring.

The Fargo Park District has 30,000 trees, about 7,800 of which are green ash. Forester Jeff Haberman wants to reduce the number of ash to 3,000.

Fargo City Forester Scott Liudahl says the city has run a similar program for years. He says the city has trimmed its boulevard ash population from 19,000 to 16,500 trees and will continue to be aggressive.
