Howell died Jan. 1 when she was struck by a car in New Zealand.
Howell was raised in Texas and worked for newspapers there before moving to Minnesota, where she worked as a reporter and editor for the Minneapolis Star. She later was top editor at the St. Paul Pioneer Press, which won two Pulitzers under her leadership.
Howell also served as Washington bureau chief and editor of Newhouse News Service, which also won a Pulitzer while she was there. She was ombudsman at the Post from 2005 to 2008.
