Minneapolis police say a teenager was gunned down less than a block from his house, marking the city's sixth homicide of the new year.
Police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Garcia says officers are tracking down leads but haven't made any arrests. He says the motive remains unclear.
The boy, identified by the Hennepin County medical examiner as 16-year-old Marvin Ray Maynard III, was shot Sunday afternoon.
About two dozen people held a vigil at the crime scene later in the day. The victim's relatives didn't attend.
The new year is only three weeks old and already the city has seen six slayings. The deaths include a triple homicide in the Seward neighborhood.
Police Inspector Mike Martin says Sunday's shooting emphasizes the need to teach teens that violence isn't the answer to solving disputes.
